6-Way Trailer Connector Towing Breakdown

A 6-way trailer connector is commonly used on gooseneck, horse, utility, and some RV trailers where electric brakes and auxiliary power are required but a full 7-way system isn’t necessary.

Typical Pin Functions (Looking at Socket on Truck)

Pin

Function

1

Ground

2

Tail / Running Lights

3

Left Turn / Brake

4

Right Turn / Brake

5

Electric Brakes

6

12V Auxiliary Power

Important: Wire color and pin location can vary by manufacturer. Always verify with a tester before rewiring.

6-Way Round (Blade / RV-Style)

Used more in RV applications. Functionally similar but blade orientation differs.

Functions usually include:

  • Ground
  • Tail Lights
  • Left Turn/Brake
  • Right Turn/Brake
  • Electric Brakes
  • 12V Auxiliary

What Each Circuit Does (Towing Function)

🟢 Ground

Completes all circuits.
Bad ground = dim lights, weak brakes, intermittent faults.

🟤 Tail / Marker Lights

Runs clearance and running lights.

🟡 Left Turn / Brake

🔴 Right Turn / Brake

Combined stop/turn signals.

🔵 Electric Brakes

Sends proportional brake controller output to trailer brake magnets.

⚫ 12V Auxiliary

Charges trailer battery or powers interior lights, breakaway system, etc.

Common 6-Way Towing Failures

❌ Corroded pins

❌ Weak ground connection

❌ Mis-pinned rewires

❌ No brake output from controller

❌ 12V aux not charging trailer battery

❌ Intermittent brake lockup

Most “no brake” complaints trace back to:

  • Bad ground
  • Open brake circuit
  • Corroded brake pin

How to Quickly Diagnose a 6-Way Connector Issue

Instead of plugging into a truck and guessing, using a diagnostic tester to independently power each circuit, verify brake output under load, confirm correct pin-out, test 12V aux without vehicle variables.

A purpose-built trailer tester isolates wiring faults without involving the truck’s computer system.

6-Way vs 7-Way — When Is 6-Way Used?

Choose 6-Way when:

  • No reverse circuit needed
  • Older gooseneck/horse trailer
  • Ag or farm equipment trailer
  • Medium-duty electric brake trailers

Upgrade to 7-Way when:

  • Reverse lights required
  • ABS or additional circuits needed
  • Heavy-duty fleet standardization
